Sony DCRTRV310 Handycam Digital Camcorder Feature

  • 360x digital zoom
  • High-quality Digital 8 format
  • Infrared night video capability
  • Stereo recording
  • 3.5-inch swivel LCD screen

Sony DCRTRV310 Handycam Digital Camcorder Overviews

Hi-8mm Handycam vision digital camcorder w/stereo recording and playback. 360X digital zoom, nightshot infrared 0Lux system, special effects, 3 1/2″ swivelscreen color LCD. Laserlink connection. IMAGE Stabilization, remote.

Sony DCRTRV310 Handycam Digital Camcorder Specifications

The Sony TRV310 Handycam provides top-of-the-line digital recording with a host of advanced options, including a large 3.5-inch LCD screen. Its powerful 360x digital zoom, wide range of special effects, image stabilization, and Sony’s unique infrared night recording capabilities make it a great choice for those needing high-end digital camcorder features. Sony’s elongated Handycam design fits easily in one hand and is well-balanced. While not the lightest of camcorders, we found the Handycam line to be one of the most ergonomic and easy to use.

The Sony TRV310 Handycam has a nifty status screen on the outside of the LCD screen module that lets you know how many minutes you’ve recorded or how far you’ve played a tape. It also tells you if there’s a tape in the camcorder. This screen is backlit for maximum visibility.

The LCD screen swivels 210 degrees, which lets you record above your head or put yourself in the picture. The optical viewfinder is black and white, which is not a real drawback since we ended up using the LCD screen for most of our shooting. The unit’s playback buttons are backlit, making it easier to use the Sony TRV310 Handycam as a VCR. This video camera also comes with a remote control unit.

The Sony TRV310 Handycam lets you manually adjust focus and exposure; it also includes seven programmed exposure modes, plus backlight compensation, to help optimize your video under different shooting conditions. It provides three recording modes–normal, hold-down, and five-second–to help you take short, lively video segments. The TRV310 also lets you record still photos. It features a high-powered 360x digital zoom, great for getting closeups and recording faraway events. This Handycam also provides electronic image stabilization to minimize camera shake, which is especially useful when using the zoom or during fast-action events.

We enjoyed Sony’s full range of special effects, including the distinctive pastel, slim, and stretch picture modes. The TRV310 provides widescreen, black-and-white, sepia, negative, and solarized modes. We also liked the range of fade options, which include fade to black, mosaic, monotone, overlap, and a bounce-image effect. The camera includes digital effects for playback, including still, flash, lumi, slow shutter, old movie, and trail modes. You can even insert a scene in the middle of a recording.

The camcorder includes Sony’s exclusive NightShot capability, which lets you shoot video in total darkness. The camcorder emits an invisible infrared beam to light the scene. The resulting video is basically black and white and lower quality than normal, but being able to get decent images in complete darkness is nonetheless pretty amazing. The TRV310 also comes with a mount for an external standard light.

This camcorder uses the Digital 8 format, which lets you record digital video on a standard Hi8 tape. Digital video gives you extraordinary video quality–up to 500 lines of resolution and CD-quality sound; it’s the top-of-the-line format. The digital format allows you to take digital still pictures, just like a digital camera. If you want to download and edit your digital still images and video on a computer, however, you have to purchase a separate video capture card first. You can also use this camcorder to play back analog 8mm and Hi8 tapes–a handy feature if you have previously recorded video in these formats.

Pros:

  • Large 3.5-inch LCD screen
  • Super-powerful zoom
  • Still photo capability
  • High-quality digital format
  • Great selection of special effects
  • Image stabilization

Cons:

  • Optical viewfinder is black and white

NO MEMORY STICK JUST THE CAMERA THE CHARGER AND THE BATTERY CAMERA HAS MINOR SCRACHES AND OR SCUFF MARKS FROM USE BUT IT IS IN GOOD CONDITION AND WORKS GREAT.

Sony DCRTRV27 MiniDV Digital Handycam Camcorder w/ 3.5″ LCD, MPEG EX, Memory Stick & Mega Pixel Video/ Still Specifications

The Sony DCR-TRV27 is a solid MiniDV camera with a load of functions, including that of a 1-megapixel digital still camera. Demanding video enthusiasts will find their needs satisfied with a 10x optical zoom, manual focus ring, a night-shooting function, and a large 3.5-inch LCD screen.

Lens
The lens is a famous, high-quality Carl Zeiss construction with a single 1/4.7-inch CCD capturing the image, enabling the camera to produce 520 lines of resolution. The SteadyShot function stabilizes the picture and reduces camera shake. Use the infrared NightShot for shooting at night or in dark settings. The TRV27 also sports a 10x optical zoom, which is enough for most purposes. Turn on the digital zoom, which electronically magnifies the optical image, and reach up to 120 times.

Digital Stills
Digital stills can be stored on a Memory Stick, which works independently from the DV tape system. The camera performs with 1-megapixel resolution, making it capable of sharp images that are up to 1,152 x 864 pixels in size. The camera can also shoot in MPEG movie mode, storing 320 x 240 videos onto the memory stick. MPEG movie lengths range from five seconds to the length allowed by the capacity of your Memory Stick.

Inputs and Outputs
The TRV27 is equipped with the standard DV IEEE 1394 port (also known as FireWire) for a super-fast, lossless connection to a PC or other DV machines. The USB connection is used to transfer digital photos and MPEG movies. The traditional S-video and RCA connections are also present for direct viewing on a television or VHS dubbing.

The DCR-TRV27 comes with one 8 MB Memory Stick. Memory Sticks are reusable, but if you tend to take a lot of digital images, then you’ll want a bigger card.

MiniDV Format
MiniDV digital technology delivers clear, sharp video with over 500 lines of horizontal resolution–far superior to the 240 lines of resolution offered by 8mm camcorders. You’ll also get minimal color noise interference for a more stable picture.

You’ll also get excellent sound quality, recorded in either 12-bit or 16-bit audio recording modes.

  • 16-bit audio includes on set of stereo audio tracks to produce CD-quality sound.
  • 12-bit audio utilizes two sets of audio tracks so you can easily add background music or commentary into your videos while maintaining the existing soundtrack.

This is all delivered on a cassette that’s 1/12th the size of a standard VHS tape. A MiniDV tape offers digital recording time of two full hours–20 times the capacity of a CD.

  • Digital photo mode records onto MiniDV tapes
  • Analog pass-through ports for direct connection to computer

Canon ZR40 MiniDV Digital Camcorder with 2.5″ LCD, & Digital Still Mode Overviews

At just over a pound, the lightweight ZR40 from Canon makes an excellent camcorder for the beginning digital-video enthusiast. This compact and comfortable camcorder offers high-end features found on much more expensive cameras, yet is easy enough to use that a novice can begin filming right away.

The camera is sleekly designed, and pieces pop out of the ZR40 from all sides. On top, the adjustable lens viewer also slides in and out so you don’t have to hold the camera too close when filming. You can also use the 2.5-inch LCD screen, which swings out of the left side of the ZR40. It also twists and can be flipped over, providing myriad filming angles.

While we were suitably impressed with the image of our capture video, the sound of the camera’s motor could be heard during some of the playback. It’s a minor annoyance, which can be overcome with an optional external microphone.

With an 18X optical zoom (as well as 360X digital) intuitively placed next to the right thumb, the ZR40 is able to get up close to the subjects you’re filming. Canon’s image stabilizer worked well at correcting the “shake” common to handheld cameras. And the camera functions as a digital camera as well, taking snapshots in addition to video.

The ZR40 offers a variety of connectivity options, including FireWire ports, composite AV, and S-video. You can input from an analog source such as a VCR, TV, or camcorder and convert the signal into digital video. It also ships with a handy remote control (with a range of 16 feet) that handles the record functions and can even zoom the lens in and out.

Various special effects modes are incorporated into the camera as well, in addition to a new low-light mode that allowed us to shoot footage in the evening. There are DV cameras out there that do more than this one, but for most users, the ZR40 does plenty and does it well. –J. Curtis

Pros:

  • Compact and comfortable
  • Easy to use
  • Excellent zoom

Cons:

  • Some motor noise

Canon ZR40 MiniDV Digital Camcorder with 2.5″ LCD, & Digital Still Mode Specifications

Improving on an original can be a daunting task. Canon has succeeded quite well, thank you. The ZR40 is the successor to the ZR20. Canon increased the optical zoom to 18x–the digital now sits at 360x–and added an analog pass-through port. Although the ZR line featured analog-in for dubbing your movies to MiniDV, the new pass-through port allows you to go straight to the computer, eliminating a possibly cumbersome step.

The ZR40 also has a lot of the same features that made the original a lot of fun. A 2.5-inch LCD is swivel-mounted, permitting the shooter to use the camera at odd angles. Various digital effects and autoexposure modes help ensure your footage turns out well. Finally, Canon threw in a low-light color-shooting mode that makes the ZR40 that much more attractive.

Panasonic PVDV910 MiniDV Digital Palmcorder Camcorder Overviews

3″ color viewscreen, color viewfinder, variable speed 18x optical zoom lens, digital electronic image stabilization, photoshot still mode, PCM stereo digital audio

Panasonic PVDV910 MiniDV Digital Palmcorder Camcorder Specifications

If you’re looking for a knockout camcorder, we recommend the Panasonic PV-DV910. With its high-resolution digital format, ultra-compact size, and large selection of useful features, the Panasonic PV-DV910 is our camcorder dream machine. It’s a good choice for both home users who want the highest quality audio/video and professionals who want high-end editing capabilities.

The Panasonic PV-DV910 isn’t much bigger than a point-and-shoot still camera, yet it packs plenty of punch when it comes to recording. It uses the MiniDV format, which gives you over 380 lines of horizontal resolution and lets you download and edit video on your PC (although you do have to purchase a 1394-compliant video capture card separately).

The Panasonic PV-DV910 was a pleasure to use. Once we got the hang of the menu wheel, utilizing the host of advanced features was a snap. We particularly enjoyed the wide range of digital effects, from strobe-like recording and negative, sepia, or solarized effects to the multiple fade-in/fade-out options. The Panasonic PV-DV910 also takes still shots–up to 750 on a tape–along with a portion of audio. This is a great feature if you have a video capture card and don’t want to buy an additional still digital camera.

The 3-inch color LCD viewfinder was big, bright, and clear. It swivels a complete 180 degrees, allowing you to tape yourself or let your subjects see themselves as you record. The Panasonic PV-DV910′s 18x optical zoom gave us sharp, clear close-ups, and its amazing 300x digital zoom let us in on extremely far-away action–just be aware that video detail decreases with high digital magnification. We found the PV-DV910′s electronic image stabilization helpful in events with fast action or when we were mobile ourselves.

One of the Panasonic PV-DV910′s best features is its ability to dub audio onto a prerecorded tape. In addition to being able to replace the original soundtrack with new audio, you can also layer a new soundtrack on top of the old one–a great feature for adding background music or commentary. We also found the Panasonic PV-DV910′s included light useful for shooting at night or in dimly lit areas.

Overall, the Panasonic PV-DV910 was both easy to use and offered a great range of fun and useful features.

Pros:

  • High-quality digital video and audio
  • Large, bright LCD screen
  • High-powered optical and digital zooms
  • Two-track audio dubbing

Cons:

  • More expensive than most nondigital camcorders

Sony DCR-TRV330 Digital8 Camcorder with Built-in Digital Still Mode Feature

  • Digital8 camcorder, uses Hi8 tapes
  • 25x optical (28x digital) zoom with image stabilization
  • 2.5 inch color LCD monitor with black and white EVF
  • Records 640 x 480 digital stills onto included 4 MB Memory Stick media
  • Uses Sony’s NP-FM30 InfoLithium battery; features Sony’s NightShot 0-Lux shooting capability

Sony DCR-TRV330 Digital8 Camcorder with Built-in Digital Still Mode Overviews

The DCR-TRV330 is a great midlevel Digital8 camcorder. Digital8 utilizes the digital video format, but records onto Hi8 tapes, and can play your old Hi8 and 8mm movies. The 25x optical (28x digital) zoom is combined with image stabilization, a boon since high zooms can lead to increased shakiness. Additionally, the DCR-TRV330 features Sony’s NightShot system for 0-lux shooting. An assortment of special effects and faders help give your footage a more professional feel. Also, a 16:9 widescreen shooting mode lets you shoot movies in the same aspect ratio as Hollywood films.

The black-and-white EVF is adequate, but the 2.5-inch color LCD monitor is the better bet for framing your shots. Digital stills can be recorded onto the accompanying 4 MB Memory Stick, and images can be downloaded to your computer via USB. Like all DV camcorders, the audio is recorded at CD-quality levels–PCM digital stereo. Should you need more professional sound than the built-in mic provides, a mic input jack is located on the camcorder.

Because the DCR-TRV330 uses the DV format, you can download your footage to a computer for editing using an IEEE 1394 cable. Analog pass-through ports are built-in, letting you digitally archive all your old analog footage. Also included are a shoulder strap, lens cap, battery, AC adapter, and remote control.
